(Week of November 13 to 19, 2016)

The Holy Eucharist and Christ’s risen presence with us are probably the two greatest gifts given to us by God for our life journey.  This is why it is so sad to see fewer and fewer Catholics going to the weekly Sunday Mass.  But this is not my main point in this reflection.

This reflection states strongly the need and value of the Eucharist and in that context I want to point out something very obvious for our purposes: at the beginning of the Eucharist, there is the Penitential Rite which has beautiful prayers of mercy like the following:

  1. Have mercy on us, O Lord.

For we have sinned against you.

Show us, O Lord, your mercy.

    And grant us your salvation.

  2. And, you were sent to heal the contrite of heart:

    Lord, have mercy.

    Lord, have mercy.

    You came to call sinners:

    Christ, have mercy.

    Christ, have mercy.

You are seated at the right hand of the Father/Mother to intercede for us:

    Lord, have mercy.

    Lord, have mercy.

Most of us have said these beautiful prayers so often that we can rattle them off in our sleep!  In other words, we have used them so often that they have become automatic and, for many of us, they no longer impact on us.  Here is a suggested little exercise for this week that might help us say and hear them with some newness.  This week for two days, take the first prayer, and outside of Mass, recite the prayer a number of times and then reflect upon it for a period of time in the Spirt of this Year of Mercy; repeat this process for two days using the second prayer.  Thank you for considering and doing this.

May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.  Amen.

Note:  The Year of Mercy officially and formally ends on Sunday, November 20, 2016, the Feast of Christ the King.
