Jesus returned to Nazareth, where he grew up.  He was known in the city and in the temple, having completed his Sabbath faithfully.  There he heard the Scriptures and the promises of God, and the call of God.  So it was that, where it all began, he rose and read from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah. He publicly declared his mission, fulfilling this prophecy.  In that same Spirit we are called to fulfill this prophecy!  We too have been anointed and given the Spirit, not only for our own sanctification, but to share with the world.  Although we may not be able to identify those around us as “poor”, “captives”, “blind”, or “downtrodden”, often hearts, minds and spirits are  in this condition, but we do not recognize it. The Spirit can give us ‘sight’ to recognize the needs of others, and in Christ’s name (and with the grace of the Holy Spirit) to bring them to Good News.
