A village in the southeast of the States was experiencing the worst drought of their history. Nothing would bring rain: no science, no “magic” brought hope. Finally, one elder in the community mentioned that there was an Indian Rain Maker in the area. Why not try him? He was called, told the problem and asked for a solution. He promised to come if the whole village would attend. Do not be afraid, I will come. Be ready. The next morning the whole assembly formed a circle and the Rain man came. Do you think I can do this, he asked. Oh Yes, they replied. We have faith in you.

As an action in ancient times, foot washing was an act of service and love. Hosts often provided water for their guests to wash their own feet after travelling on dusty roads. While disciples, out of respect and devotion, might wash the feet of a teacher or rabbi, slaves were not required to wash the feet of their master. Yet, we see Jesus, in today's gospel, washing the feet of his disciples. In this context, we begin to understand why his disciples resisted his actions. In their eyes, Jesus seems to have gotten things backwards.

Palm Sunday is always a day of contrast in relation to the Word of God – the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, proclaiming him as the “the king who comes in the name of the Lord”, and then, just a few days later, the same crowd shouting “Crucify him!” These two Gospels – on the same day – do paint a definite picture of our human condition. One moment we are bearing witness to Christ, and before we recognize it we are giving bad example. We can too easily go between being an instrument, and being an obstacle.

A mother asked her little son to go out to the veranda and get a broom for her. His answer was that it was too dark and he was afraid to go outside. Mom told him not to be afraid, “God is out there”, nothing will happen to you.. The boy went to the door and shouted out- “God are you really there? If you are, please hand me the broom!”

Coming-to-faith is an important theme in these final weeks of Lent because not only are we preparing to celebrate the great feast of Easter but it is the time of final determination of those who are preparing to be baptized and/or received into the community of believers at the Easter Vigil.

Jesus was transfigured before the disciples. He was manifested himself as the Son of God. Rather, the Father himself has declared him to be his Son! The words of the Father, so reminiscent of the Baptism of the Lord in the River Jordan, are, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.” Such a simple message, but such a great challenge. How difficult it is for us to truly ‘listen’ to Jesus. We ‘hear’ his message, but do we truly ‘listen’?

A few years back I found myself in a barber's chair near the Resurrectionist Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. Casually filling the silence, the barber and I swapped stories about our vocations. He admired my pursuit of the vocation to Religious Life and the Priesthood, and I was just as edified by his story of being happily married for 25 years. I couldn't help but ask what his secret to a lasting relationship was. His answer was immediate: “She puts up with me”

The people of Israel, believing in the prophets of God, awaited the coming of the Messiah, the Anointed One. Now he was among them, although not revealed fully. Then, in his hometown, he read the well-known prophecy of the Prophet Isaiah. I am sure that these words had been proclaimed often in the synagogue, but today was different, today was unique.
