Sunday Reflections
Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
Reflection by:
Bob Sproule, Apostle of the Resurrection
Today’s gospel is taken from the very end of Chapter 23. If considered in the very narrow context of the events this chapter describes, we read the most poignant story in human history, the crucifixion of Christ. This chapter starts with Jesus being brought before Pilate, being sentenced to death, and finally nailed to a cross. The story of the salvation of mankind, the paschal mystery is not completely covered but is represented by this Sunday’s name, (the Feast of) The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.
Verses 35-43 of this Chapter in Luke’s gospel recounts the conversation between Jesus and two criminals hanged with Him. The events of the past 24+ hours would be so debilitating, even to the Son of God, that He probably wants nothing more than death to be relieved from the agony He has incurred. And how does Jesus respond to the pleading of one of the criminals? Even given all of his suffering, he shows his infinite mercy towards this criminal by responding, “Truly, I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise”.
Jesus is ever merciful, even while He is living through His own death. We should never hesitate in reaching out to Him.
Starting with the reading in Samuel, David is proclaimed as the first true ruler of Israel, the shepherd of my (God’s) people.
The second reading from St. Paul to the Colossians uses many descriptions to support his and our belief that Christ is the King of the Universe. Paul reminds us that (Christ) “rescued us from the power of darkness”, “through the forgiveness of our sins”, “all things were created through Him and for Him”, and finally (Christ)” is the first born from the dead”. All these phrases powerfully remind us of who Christ is and what He has done for us.
How are we going to respond to this understanding of who Christ is? Are we going to ask for His infinite mercy? Will we be open to His grace? For truly Jesus Christ is King of the Universe.
