Fr. Evandro and Fr. Jim traveled on the new high-speed train to Morogoro from Dar es Salaam on July 29. It usually takes about 5 hours to make this journey by vehicle, but the train takes only 2 hours. Br. Mosses Katikiro, C.R., rector of the postulants in Morogoro, met Fr. Evandro and Fr. Jim at the train station. In thirty minutes, Fr. Evandro arrived at the formation house in Morogoro. After Evening Prayer and Mass, Fr. Evandro was able to join the seminarians for dinner. The nine postulants were on vacation, awaiting novitiate, and the seminarians were in the middle of their first week of final examinations.
At this point the membership of the Formation House includes Fr. Jim and Br. Mosses (formators), Petro Kushaha and Selestine Matutu (3rd year theology), Valentino Chatanda and Livinus Galeba (2nd year theology), Jerome Jonas, Cleophase Kajuna, and Audax Maganya (1st year theology), Karoli Kavishe, Joseph Amani, and Paschal Rwigana (2nd year philosophy), Alexander Baraka, Emmanuel Faraja, Evodius Mushumbusi, Adrian Mzuma, Anold Peregrine, and Silvestian Sanga (1st year philosophy). Added to this number in the fall will be 10 new postulants, and 9 new seminarians in 1st year philosophy for a total of 37 members. Fr. Evandro began his personal visitation with all the members of the formation house in the midst of the examinations and also the preparation for the perpetual vows of Selestine Matutu, C.R. on August 1.
Fr. Jim presided and Fr. Evandro received Selestine’s perpetual vows at St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Parish in Tungi, Morogoro. It was a wonderful liturgical celebration, followed afterward with food and fellowship at the formation house. We were joined by family members, local religious, seminarians, and friends.
Selestine Matutu’s father and mother and Fr. Evandro are happy participants in the celebration.
There was good food, music, gifts and, of course, a wonderful cake to mark the occasion.
Wednesday, August 5 marked another occasion for celebration as Fr. Evandro witnessed the vow renewal of 14 seminarians. The witnesses that signed included Fr. Jim, Br. Mosses and the newly perpetually professed Selestine Matutu.
In the evening, there was a dinner that included ice cream for dessert! In addition, there were many words of thanks and some small gifts for Fr. Evandro in gratitude for his time at the formation house in Morogoro.
In a few short days, Fr. Evandro had met with each person in the formation house, celebrated the perpetual vows of Selestine and received the vow renewal of the fourteen seminarians. Fr. Evandro also met with the engineer for our new formation property and was around during the time that we successfully drilled a well at this new property (150 meters deep!).
As usual, things did not always go smoothly. At different times, the internet, the electricity, and the water failed. In the mission, people are used to things breaking down frequently. However, Fr. Evandro took everything in stride, including shifting rooms because of a water flood in his first room!
