We usually have Mass in seven different places on Sunday in the Buhemba Parish. But, once a month, the whole parish gathers in the main church. This was the plan for my last Mass in Buhemba, which coincided with my 40th anniversary.
Two priests who are great friends of ours came for the celebration, namely, Fr. William Nyuki, OFM Cap., and Fr. Zedekia Mwinura (a priest from the Diocese of Musoma). We were ready to start!
The church was overflowing…with many people standing outside.
But the choir, the dancing girls, the servers, and the priests were ready to begin!!!!
After incensing the altar at the beginning of the Eucharist, Fr. Maciej said a few words of greeting. I was able to relax (a bit) after that. It was amazing to see so many people in the church! Two words: Wow! Amazing!
Mass began with me leading the introductory rites. By now, I was feeling much more confident in my Swahili when presiding at the Eucharist.
Brother Michael, Fr. William Nyuki, and Fr. Yohana, with servers Robert and John.
I prepared the incense and then Fr. Zedekia proclaimed the Gospel.
You will not believe some of the gifts I received…let’s say some of them are “living things!”
Stay tuned for “Part II!”
