A Prayer for the Longest Night

December 21 marks the Winter Solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.  Let us offer a prayer to the Lord of Light on this dark day.

Dear Lord of Light,

On this short day, when night creeps in so quickly, we struggle to remain positive and focus on the light.

But the glory of your creation is all around us!  Help us, especially today, to see you in the gentle snowflakes outside our window, in the winter birds singing, in our neighbours as they wish us a Merry Christmas.  Please be with all those who are struggling in the darkness, weighed down by trials.

Soon we will celebrate your incarnation.  Today, although it is dark, we prepare in our hearts and our homes to celebrate the miracle of your birth, and the beginning of our salvation story.  Thank you Lord for being our light, for being our Star, guiding us through the night.

Amen.
