Beginning of a New Year

Before departing for Tanzania, I joined the rest of the Canadian Province to celebrate the Jubilees of Fr. Evandro Miranda Rosa, C.R, (25 years of priesthood), Fr. Tim Uniac (40 years of priesthood), and Fr. Jim Link (50 years of priesthood). Unfortunately, Fr. Evandro was not able to be present due to the death of his father.

Most of the Resurrectionists and Apostles of the Resurrection were able to be present. We were able to celebrate this great event with liturgy and prayer, food and fellowship.

It was great for me to be able to spend time with my Resurrection family and to be able to participate the next day in our synodal gathering at Resurrection College. It was a productive meeting as we look to the future with hopes and dreams.

A particular highpoint was the presence of so many of the Apostles of the Resurrection who were able to participate in the Jubilee celebration but also in the synodal gathering as well. Their presence and input makes us better in our goal of living out our Resurrectionist charism and mission.

My quick flight from Toronto through Detroit was derailed into a longer flight through Atlanta, but I made it back to Maryland on Sunday, October 18 so that I could depart from Dulles International Airport the next day.

I had six 32 kg (70 lbs.) suitcases, plus a carryon. Much of the space was taken up by books, but I also had some gifts of clothing and other things that would make life in the formation house better for all of us. As you can imagine, it is not easy commandeering six suitcases, but with help, I managed.

The flight from Dulles to Dubai is 14 hours. I had a one-and-a-half-hour layover, and then another 6 hours to Dar es Salaam. By the time I landed I did not know “the day nor the hour!” I actually did not feel well but it was just from the strain and the jet lag. I stayed a day in Dar es Salaam before Br. Mosses arrived to pick me up and drive five hours to Morogoro.

It was great to see the new aspirants and the seminarians again. This year we have eight aspirants under Br. Mosses’ leadership. Present now are Godfrey, Jonas, Petro, Harry, Peter, and Lameck. They will be joined on December 1 by two brother candidates: Fulgence and Baraka. (We may add two more in the coming days.)

We have 23 seminarians this year. There are 9 seminarians in first Philosophy, 6 seminarians in second Philosophy, and 3 seminarians in third Philosophy. In Theology, we have 3 seminarians in their second year and 2 seminarians in their third year. Selestine Matutu will join us in March after his pastoral experience.

Front row: Evodius, Valentino, Edison, Luis, Silvestian, and Cleophace.
Second row: Livinus, Robert, Livinus, Emanuel, Joseph, Anold, and Polycarp.
Third row: Adrian, Hilary, Jerome, Audax, and Emmanuel.
Fourth row: Karoli, Linus, Alexander, Paschal, and Desdery.

After the orientation week, the first week of school was suddenly upon us. There were many things to get in order, including repairing the bicycles with which the seminarians will ride to school. But there were also some school purchases to be made, including some clothing, school supplies, and in some cases some new smart phones and computers for school use.

It is quite a large group (29 aspirants and seminarians), with four more aspirants joining us in early December and Selestine arriving in March. With Fr. Jim and Br. Mosses, we will have 36 people altogether. We are full!

New Year - 7

Our regular routine of prayer, meals, recreation, work, and study has resumed. But the center of our life is our spiritual development through our liturgies every day.
