Clean-Up Time

We have a rotation of people who take turns leading prayer and being responsible for the evening dishes.

This week’s crew includes Selestine (2nd year theology) and Karoli (1st year philosophy), whose job is to load the dishwasher and to wash the pots and pans.

There is quite a story about the dishwasher. I noticed that people would start getting colds and soon everyone had a cold. One of the things that dishwashers are good for is the sterilization of the dishes, glasses, and cutlery. So Daniel and I bought a dishwasher, only to find out that we did not have sufficient water pressure for it to work. That took some time, but we found a pump that would increase the water pressure. But then we could not find any dishwasher soap. A great friend, Jeanne Kuhn, sent some from Maryland, and we were off to the races.

Then, we ran into another problem. The water was so hot that it began to melt our plastic dishes! The plates began to look more like large bowls! We decided that we would buy some dishwasher/microwave safe plates. New problem: they were too big for the dishwasher’s upper arm to spin freely. Oh my goodness.

It turns out that this was not such a big problem because loading dishes from 30 people did not leave much room for plates. So we wash the plates by hand and put all the other dishes and cutlery in the dishwasher. It has kept the dishes clean and the spread of germs down.

Livinus (1st year theology) is not really helping Selestine…he is just getting in the way of real work! Ha Ha!

Joseph (3rd year theology) snuck into the kitchen to get the popcorn for Friday night recreation.

Petro (2nd year Theology) is sampling some of the juice that the cooks make for us. It is delicious, made mostly from passion fruit and avocadoes, with the main ingredient, the mangos (which come from our trees).

Meanwhile, out in the dining room, there is another crew that is responsible for setting the tables for breakfast, readying the breakfast food and beverages, and filling the water jars. I usually help with this crew. For some reason, I have always like setting the table!

Vitalis (4th year theology) is an “old hand” at this and can manage quite a few cups at once!

We all know that it takes everyone to contribute to community life. These small tasks, such as washing the dishes and setting the tables, add a great deal to our life together.
