Sunday Reflections
Feast of Epiphany – January 4, 2026
Reflection by:
the late +Bishop Brian Leo Hennessey, CR
The magi draw our attention as we reflect on this feast but they are only manifestations of a deeper reality, the revelation of Christ as the light of all peoples. These ‘wise men from the East’ whose names only appear for the first time in the ninth-century, stand for us who have had Christ revealed.
God excludes no one. The magi were, after all, foreigners, strangers, non-believers until they encountered the child. Like them we, too, recognize Jesus and do him homage. What gifts do we bring? We should ask ourselves how well we are living up to our commitment, how clearly is God made manifest in us? For our lives, too, should be an epiphany. In our words and deeds each of us is called to proclaim to those with whom we come in contact that God did indeed become one of us so that all of us, rich or poor… saint or sinner, could share in his godliness.
The magi brought their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. May we continually bring our gifts of love and service to the Lord through our love and service of our neighbour, whoever he or she may be.

We can talk about peace. We can hope for peace. But let peace begin with me.
