We have about 15 fire extinguishers in the various buildings of our Formation House. We usually have an inspection each year and use that opportunity to make sure that all the extinguishers are recharged and are in good working order. This year there was an additional feature as we were able to make sure that everyone knows when to use them and how they work.
Two members of the fire department came by on a Saturday morning to demonstrate the use of the extinguishers. Everyone gathered outside, including our cooks Pendo, Maria, and Neema.
First, we had to prepare something to set on fire. It turns out that some mixture of oil and dish soap will take care of everything if you want a fire. After some time, all was ready!
Actually, the kitchen is probably the most likely place for a fire, so it is good that Maria and Pendo know what to do.
All in all, it was a good experience and everyone is much better prepared if we have something unfortunate happen.
Profile on Postulants
Over the next issues, I thought I would do a short profile on each of the postulants so that you can get to know them. The postulants are under the care and direction of Br. Mosses. They are learning more about themselves and the Congregation of the Resurrection to see if they are suitable candidates for novitiate next year.
Saulo Enos Somelo
Saulo is 22 years old, born on February 3, 2004. He is from Sengerema in the Mwanza Region. At home there are his father and mother, one sister and one brother; he is the middle child.
Saulo would like to become a priest in the Congregation of the Resurrection. When I asked him why he wants to become part of the Congregation, he told me that he is attracted by our mission to work for the resurrection of society.
Saulo likes sports, especially football, volleyball and basketball, where he can put his height to good use (189 cm; 6.2 ft).
He also loves teaching young people, which he has done at school and in his parish, Our Lady of the Sick Parish. Of course, he misses his family and friends, but he has immersed himself into community life here. He enjoys that “they cooperate together in prayer and activities.” As this photo suggests, Saulo is well loved. Here, he is with two other postulants, Philemon (on the left) and Gervas (on the right).
Gervas Isaya Gervas
Gervas is 21 years old, born on December 8, 2004. At home there are his mother and father, three sisters and five brothers. He hails from the Kigoma District in the Kigoma Region.
Gervas would like to be a priest in the Congregation of the Resurrection. He is especially attracted to our Charism of hope which he thinks is a wonderful gift that we, as Resurrectionists, can bring to the world.
Gervas likes to play the piano and to sing. I am not exaggerating, but Gervas puts every ounce of energy that he has into singing; he really is a joy to watch!
Gervas also like to play sports for exercise, such as volleyball and football. He is not an avid watcher of sports on TV and would rather go running on a day when there is no game to be played with the other seminarians.
Gervas enjoys living in community with his brother postulants and seminarians. He is a very joyful person and is always ready to volunteer to help others. He misses his family but he told me that “I am finding a new family here with my brothers.”
Gervas was always willing to climb into the mango trees so that we could enjoy the great fruit that they supply.

3rd Sunday of Lent – March 8, 2026
As we mark the halfway point of the season of Lent, may our journeys through this spiritual desert bring us closer to God and renew us in spirit.

Thirst
It is unlikely if you are reading this that you have not had a taste of the “living water” that Jesus is speaking of, the deeper satisfaction that comes from encountering God.
