National Indigenous Peoples Day 2025

National Indigenous Peoples Day takes place on the summer solstice, June 21, the longest day of the year. For generations, many First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities have celebrated their cultures, languages, and traditions at this time of year. The summer solstice holds deep spiritual and cultural significance for many Indigenous Peoples, marking a time of renewal, connection, and celebration.
Every year, First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities across the country host events on or around June 21 to share and celebrate their rich and diverse cultures and traditions.  Here in Waterloo Region all are invited to a free event at The Museum, called At First Light.

Celebrate National Indigenous People’s Day and the Summer Solstice.
A traditional Sunrise Ceremony will start at 5:59 am on Saturday, June 21st!

Haudenosaunee Community Member, Kelly Fran Davis will share Haudenosaunee teachings and lead a tobacco offering. Local fire keeper, Mike Duke will support the ceremony and will keep the fire alive throughout the ceremony.

After the ceremony guests are invited to come into THEMUSEUM’s Atrium and experience Haudenosaunee & Anishinaabe singing and dancing!
