Our gathering on Monday, December 9 was very moving. People gathered from different directions in the early evening to celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary and to make or renew a commitment as an Apostle of the Resurrection. We made a promise and signed a certificate indicating this commitment. This added a level of seriousness and intentionality to this decision we had made. So seldom do we make such a promise!
As Apostles, we promise to grow in holiness and work for the resurrection of society as well as support the ministries of the Congregation of the Resurrection. The unity of clergy and laity is so necessary and fruitful...working together to build the Kingdom of God on earth.
On this Feast day, one of the readings described the event in the Garden of Eden when Eve, at the temptation of the serpent, shared the apple ( fruit from the Tree of Knowledge) with Adam. It seems that “the “ woman was responsible for the original Sin.
In my reflections, it occurred to me that Mary was “the” woman who God sent to grant humanity a second chance. God prepared Mary through her Virgin Birth to be ready to give birth to Jesus, the Saviour of the World. The juxtaposition of Eve and Mary in human history is a mystery to be contemplated.
