Renewal of Temporary Vows and New Novices

While the 2024-2025 novices were professing their first vows in Buhemba, seven seminarians renewed their vows in Morogoro.

Fr. Yohana Kachwele, C.R. received the renewal of vows as the delegate of our Superior General, Fr. Evandro Miranda Rosa, C.R.

Fr. Yohana at his deaconate ordination and with his father.

Emmanuel Ntula, C.R. and Vitalis Masika, C.R. have just finished their 4th year of Theology at Jordan University College. They had professed their perpetual vows earlier and are now ready to begin their pastoral year appointment. They will minister with Fr. Phillip Justinian Makondo, C.R. at our parish in Butiama for a year. Hopefully, they will be ordained transitional deacons and priests in the near future.

Emmanual is from the Tabora region and Vitalis is from Dar es Salaam. As part of their fourth-year studies, they each completed a long essay. Emmanual’s long essay was entitled: “Re-envisioning the Sukuma Culture in Light of Roman Catholic Ecclesiology. Vitalis’ long essay was entitled: “Islamization of the Christian North Africa: Causes and Consequences.”

They each also passed their comprehensive examinations as part of their requirements to earn their pontifical degree from the Urbaniana University in Rome. By chance, I was one of the member of the panel for Emmanuel. He did an excellent job presenting on the topic of euthanasia.

Jospeh Chacha, C.R., also under perpetual vows, will begin his fourth year of theology in the fall 2025. Like Emmanuel and Vitalis, he will then have a pastoral experience of a year before ordination to deaconate and priesthood. He will have a busy year finishing his long essay and passing his comprehensive examinations.

Petro Kushaha, C.R. and Selestine Matutu, C.R. have completed their second year of theology and will begin their third-year studies in the fall 2025. The university has made a change in the number of years of theological study, so after next year, Petro and Selestine will have an 8-month pastoral experience and then return to the formation house and university for 4 months. They renewed their vows for the fifth time on August 15.

Livinus Galeba, C.R. and Valentino Chatanda, C.R. finished their first year of theology and will begin their second year of theological studies in the fall 2025. They were part of my Synoptic Gospels class last fall. They renewed their vows for the first time on August 15.

Livinus was part of our market team during the school year. Valentino is a veterinarian. He did a wonderful job of looking after the pigs and the chickens, as well as making sure that our dogs remain healthy. As you can imagine, it is a huge task because the animals must be cared for each day.

Karoli Kavishe, C.R., Joseph Amani, C.R., and Paschal Rwigana, C.R. renewed their vows for the first time on August 15. They completed their first year of Philosophy and will begin their second year of Philosophical studies in the fall 2025. Karoli and Joseph were also part of our market team, working to make sure that we had the necessary food each week. Paschal took on a new challenge, acting as our “fundi.” He was the one who tried to hang pictures and fix everything, including broken pipes, toilets, electric fixtures, and water pumps.

Back in Buhemba, on the day before the profession of first vows, the new candidates for novitiate were received by Fr. Duda, C.R. These young men will undergo an intense year of formation, learning about the Resurrectionist community, history, spirituality, and traditions. At present, the novitiate is located at the Buhemba parish. It is not an ideal location. The space for the novitiate is very crowded, and the parish has grown, with a pre-primary, primary, and secondary school. Hence, it is not the quietest place, which is not ideal for novitiate. We are actively working to solve this problem.

These young men had spent the previous year in Morogoro under the direction of Fr. Daniel Hinc, C.R.  They were a joy to be with last year and I hope and pray that they will persevere in their call to be Resurrectionists, but more importantly, that they will be open to listening to whatever it is that God is calling them to commit themselves whole-heartedly.

Fr. Andrzej Duda, C.R., Hilary, Robert, Polycarp, Emanuel, Luis, Desdery, Edison, Linus, and Livinus.
