We are all called to be prophets – those who speak for God to his people. Ezekiel was a reluctant prophet. St. Paul struggled in evangelizing the communities of faith he had formed. Even Jesus suffered as a prophet, being rejected for the truth he spoke. Yet Ezekiel, Paul, and Jesus (and so many others) were faithful to their mission, because they realized it was a call from God, and that God would provide that which they needed to complete their mission. In our time and place it is not easy to speak for God to others, perhaps (as with Jesus) especially to those closest to us. Since we are all a ‘work in progress’ they expect a perfect person alone to carry out this prophetic role. That would eliminate all of us, except Jesus! In our humanity, in our human condition, we are still called to speak for God, and the grace of the Holy Spirit will lead and guide us in that prophetic mission.
