I always wondered why Zachariah, the father of John the Baptist, was rendered speechless by the angel when he questioned how he and his wife Elizabeth would have a son in their old age. The answer is, of course, that as a priest who knew the Sacred Scriptures, he should have known that God was able to do such a thing in the past, as he did for instance with Abraham and Sarah. Zachariah should have been more trusting that God could work a wonderful thing for him and Elizabeth, just as God had done countless times for Israel in the past.
Perhaps our lesson this week is to reflect on our past and to recognize the hand of God working in “mysterious ways” in our lives. If we can identify these moments, and are able to recall them in the midst of present crises, we will able to be more trusting of God’s good intentions for us in our future.
