Via Lucis – Way of Light

The Third Step on the Way of Light

The Way of Light, modelled on the Stations (or Way) of the Cross, invites us to meet the Risen Christ. It leads us down the path of Easter spirituality, whose dominant themes are new life, living hope, peace of heart, witnessing to the Good News, and communion with the Risen One.

The Canadian Province of the Congregation of the Resurrection has produced our own Via Lucis, and this Easter Season we want to share excerpts of it with you.  Stay tuned each week for another Step on the Way of Light!

Now on that same day two of [the disciples] were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened.

While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, [Jesus] interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.

Luke 24: 13-16, 27

The Third Step on the Way of Light

The Risen Lord Breaks Open the Word
on the Road to Emmaus

Reflection:
Two of the disciples, confused and heartbroken, were walking to Emmaus and discussing the terrible events they had witnessed in Jerusalem, culminating in Jesus’ death. These caused them to question everything they thought they knew about Jesus, his teachings, and their own vocations. Then Jesus himself came to walk with them, although they did not recognize him. He broke open the Scriptures for them, revealing how, in the Word of God, they could find an answer to their disappointment, sadness, and hopelessness.

We too face terrible challenges in our own lives; illness, loss of work or relationships, injustice, death. Our circumstances can lead us to crises of faith, hopelessness, giving in to temptations, and isolating ourselves from the world. When we walk this road, we must remember that Jesus also walks with us, discreetly, offering his Word to enlighten, comfort and strengthen us.

Prayer:

Risen Jesus, whenever we are confused and our hearts are reluctant to believe, join us and be with us in our sadness, disappointments, and hopelessness.

Enlighten us with your Word. Teach us how to open the Scriptures for others, that we may proclaim faith in the death and resurrection of Christ, and thus “become a visible sign of the passage from death to life.” (VC 63)

Through your holy Resurrection be glorified, Risen Lord!

Amen.
