Our Tanzanian Mission is exploring the possibility of opening a new parish in the Arusha Diocese, ministering to the Maasai. At present, there are 4 Polish diocesan priests who minister in three places to the Maasai in one parish. Two priests (Fr. Adrian and Fr. Kazmir) minister at the original site, and two priests (Fr. Marek and Fr. Maximillian) minister at the place that we are investigating. If we took on this place, those two Polish Diocesan priests would focus on the third place, which has had little attention.
If all goes well, Fr. Daniel Hinc, C.R. will move to this new parish. He is finishing his three-year commitment as the rector for the aspirants in Morogoro. There are still many things to sort out and more information to gather.

Part of the information gathering was for Fr. Daniel and me to visit the site of the new venture. My friend, Kevin Donelson, came along as part of his Tanzanian experience! It took about 3 ½ hours for us to drive to the place where Fr. Adrian and Fr. Kasmir minister. We took the tarmac road that goes to Dodoma (the capital) but turned off after 2 hours. This is when we encountered the rough roads that were made worse since we are in the rainy season.
Fr. Adrian gave us a tour of his parish: church, rectory, school, and gardens. Here, Fr. Daniel stands in the parish church. The “main” part is inside the doorway that you see. This part is in case they have larger celebrations. It is open-air with a roof to protect people from the rain.

Here is a photo of the inside part of the church where services are ordinarily held. We were not there on Sunday, so I don’t know how many people attend, but on Monday morning Mass, there were about 30 people.

Fr. Daniel and Fr. Adrian. Fr. Adrian is a diocesan missionary priest from Poland.

Fr. Daniel and Fr. Adrian tour the sacristy of the church. They are working on this right now.

This is the water tower…a most important part of life in Tanzania. There is a pump that pushes the water from the well into the tank on top of the tower. Then, through gravity, water is distributed to parts of the mission.

The mission produces enough water to aid those who live nearby. These boys are responsible for helping people get the water that they need.

Fr. Andrian continues the tour with Kevin, Fr. Daniel and me.
Kevin was interested in the pigs that Fr. Adrian raises.
Fr. Adrian has planted a garden of various vegetables and fruit trees. In the case of the latter, he is looking “long-term,” planting apple, pear, peach, mango, banana, and papaya trees.
My room…everything that I needed…a bed, a desk, and a bathroom!

Kevin relaxes in the living room before a supper of beef stroganoff.

In the next blog, we will visit our potential new part of the Tanzanian Mission.
