Visit with the Maasai – Part 2

We ended the last Maasai blog when we were about to eat a good dinner of beef stroganoff! Fr. Adrian was a chef at one time in his life…so the food was wonderful, including a loaf of freshly baked bread. The dining room is prepared.

Fr. Adrian is teaching this young Maasai to cook. He does this on the weekends and does an amazing job. He is only 16 years old!

The kitchen and the cook! The next morning we were off to the site of our potential new parish among the Maasai.

It took us about 2 ½ hours of rough wet roads to arrive at the site of this outstation. We had time for a tour, as Mass begins when people arrive. Because of the rain and the bad roads, we guessed that people would assemble at about 11:30 or 12:00.

First up, was a tour of a bedroom and bathroom for the priests who live here. One bedroom houses the solar batteries.

This is the kitchen and the dining room, which also functions as a daily chapel and a meeting room. The woman in the red shirt also teaches at the small primary school.

Fr. Marek led Fr. Daniel, Kevin and me on a tour, which began with the internet satellite.

Fr. Marek’s room: bed, desk, bookcase, and bathroom.

Kevin checking out the corn! You might notice that Kevin has a jacket on. This part of Tanzania is well above sea level, so it is much cooler than places such as Morogoro and Dar es Salaam.

Kevin Donelson and Fr. Daniel…on mission!

Fr. Marek gives us a tour of the church where we will celebrate Sunday Mass. They had just built a new tabernacle for the worship space.

Some of the children started to gather…they usually sit in the side alcoves of the church.

Checking out the sacristy.

There is much more to see in the next blog, including Fr. Jim presiding at Mass in Swahili on 2 minutes notice!!!!!!

We too are called to be apostles and spread the Good News. We each do this in our own way, through our words but more importantly through our actions.
