The setting of the Gospel passage today is when Jesus is sharing His “last discourse” or His last words with the disciples before He will lay down His life for them. Jesus speaks of how the disciples cannot “bear” all the information that will pertain to the future situations of their lives. It is suffice for them to know that Jesus will impart the Spirit to them, and that this Spirit will reveal to the disciples all the truth that they will need to know in their future situations as they arise.

Similarly for us, it would be quite a burden to know ahead of time all the details of how the Risen Lord in His Spirit will be with us in all the future events of our lives. We have the guarantee that the Spirit will always be with us, leading and guiding us. This Spirit-led path is one that will bear great fruit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Paul assures us that if we live by the Spirit, we will be guided in these Spirit-filled ways.
