Who’s Who in Morogoro?

It is not easy to connect all the seminarians with their names and their year of study.

Emmanuel and Vitalis: 4th year Theology seminarians.

This is Emmanuel Ntula, C.R. and Vitalis Masika, C.R. They are both in the 4th year of Theology at Jordan University College. They have one more semester before they begin their pastoral year. (That is our Founder, Bogdan Janski, in the background in the picture frame.) Both Emmanuel and Vitalis have professed their perpetual vows in the Congregation of the Resurrection. Emmanuel is from Tabora and Vitalis is from Dar es Salaam.

Joseph, Mario and Brayan: 3rd year Theology seminarians.

Joseph Chacha, C.R., Mario Rutajula, C.R., and Brayan Edward Gigo, C.R. are in their third year of theological studies at Jordan University College. Joseph has taken his perpetual vows in the Congregation. Mario and Brayan have professed temporary vows. These three seminarians will move to their fourth year of theology in October 2025. Joseph is from our parish in Buhemba, while Mario is from Mwanza, and Brayan’s home is in the village of Ingri in the district of Rorya.

Francis, Gervas, Petro, and Selestine: 2nd year Theology seminarians.

Francis Peter Kapanda, C.R., Gervas Sililo, C.R., Petro Francis Kashaha, C.R., and Selestine Matutu, C.R. are in their second year of theological studies at Jordan University College. Francis and Gervas, both temporary professed members of the Congregation, are from Mwanza. Petro and Francis are also temporary professed members of the Congregation. They have known each other for years and grew up in Bunda, a small city in the diocesan that borders the Musoma Diocese, where our parishes in Butiama and Buhemba reside. All four of these men will begin their 3rd year of theological studies in October 2025.

Jordan University has recently changed its theology program, reducing the number of years of study from four to three. This new configuration includes a one-year pastoral experience which begins after the third year of studies. Seminarians will have eight months in a pastoral placement and then will return to Jordan University and their house of formation for four months of additional pastoral courses.

Livinus and Valentino: 1st year Theology seminarians.

Livinus Galeba, C.R. and Valentino Chatanda, C.R. professed their temporary vows in August 2024 in Buhemba. They are currently in their first year of theological studies at Jordan University College. I had both Livinus and Valentino in my Synoptic Gospels/Acts of the Apostles class this semester. I would check in with them about how things were going. Frequently, Valentino told me that “we are all suffering.” I am not sure whether that is good or bad! Of course, I don’t want to inflict suffering on people, but I do want them to learn about Matthew, Mark, and Luke-Acts to help their spiritual life and their future preaching. Livinus is from Kayanga and Valentino is from Jombe. Livinus is great on the drums and Valentino is a veterinarian who looks after our dogs, chickens and pigs. It is amazing how much work it is to care for the animals, especially the chickens. We started with 200 chicks, but we have eaten many of these. Now we are waiting for the remaining ones to start laying eggs.

Karoli, Joseph and Paschal: 1st year Philosophy seminarians.

Karoli Kavishe, C.R., Joseph Amani, C.R., and Paschal Rwigana, C.R. professed their temporary vows in August 2024. They have begun their philosophy studies this year and are doing well as we approach the end of the first semester. Karoli and Joseph are from Kilimanjaro and Paschal is from the Musoma Diocese, where our two parishes are located. For his house job, Paschal is in charge of maintenance/repairs. He is busy changing light bulbs, fixing leaky faucets, replacing electrical outlets, and many other tasks. Karoli and Joseph are part of two teams of three, who alternate going to the market every Friday. It takes 4-5 hours of shopping to get the fruit and vegetables that it takes to feed 30 people each week.

One other important person in our community is Br. Michael Charles Mabuluga, C.R. Michael first professed his temporary vows in August 2020. He is now completing his secondary education at Alfagems Secondary School in Morogoro.

For his house job, Michael keeps the laundry room and the storerooms clean. He also helps in the sacristy when he has time. He has a busy schedule, as he goes to school six days a week.

Br. Michael

In addition to Br. Michael and the 14 seminarians, we have 10 aspirants under the direction of their rector, Fr. Daniel Hinc, C.R. They live in the building that provides the background for our photos. If all goes well, they will begin Novitiate under Fr. Andrzej Duda, C.R. next year in Buhemba, and then return here to Morogoro to begin their philosophy studies.

Right now the ten aspirants are spending time developing their spiritual life, learning about different prayer types and practices, studying the catechism, carrying out manual work, having time for recreation, and creating community bonds.

Each of them spent about three weeks with us last year on a “Come and See” visit. I think we were able to get a good enough sense of these potential candidates, and we were able to make some reasonably good choices. So far, so good!

Left to Right: Emmanual, Livinus, Robert, Louis, Desdery, Patrice, Linus, Edison, Polycarp, and Hillary.
